Walking Again: A Quest for Deeper Clarity

Life is like a game of Twister, filled with unexpected twists and turns that often leave us in awkward positions, desperately seeking clarity and direction. In my ongoing quest for mental gymnastics, I recently embarked on another epic walk. As the scenery changed, so did my outlook on life, and I discovered that, much like my ability to find matching socks, clarity is a skill that can be developed over time.

As I laced up my walking shoes and hit the pavement, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much life had changed since my last long walk. The rapid pace of life had ushered in new challenges, opportunities, and experiences. In the midst of these changes, I felt a deep need to reconnect with myself and gain a clearer sense of where I was headed.

Interestingly, I noticed that this time around, I didn’t need to walk for as long to achieve the same sense of clarity. It was as if the act of walking had become a skill, one that I had honed and developed over time. This realization led me to ponder the idea that clarity, much like any other skill, can be cultivated and refined with practice.

In an attempt to channel my inner Zen master, I decided to incorporate mindfulness into each step. I paid close attention to my surroundings, the rhythm of my breath, and the subtle sensations in my body. As I walked, I observed recurring thought patterns that had been a constant companion on my previous journeys. In a moment of introspection and noticing the thoughts in my mind, I asked myself a question I had never considered before: “I wonder where these thoughts are coming from. Are they mine? Are they all from last experience so that’s all my mind knows? How can it know something different? How about a new thought?” It was a simple yet profound shift in perspective. By consciously requesting new thoughts, I invited a wave of creativity and alternative viewpoints into my consciousness.

The impact of this simple act of requesting new thoughts was nothing short of life-changing. As I walked, I found my mind opening up to fresh ideas, innovative solutions, and a sense of mental liberation. It was a powerful reminder that we have the ability to shape our thoughts and, by extension, our experiences.

In the ever-changing landscape of life, the act of taking a long walk has proven to be a reliable compass, guiding me towards clarity and direction. Through the practice of mindfulness and the intentional reshaping of my thought patterns, I’ve discovered a newfound skill—one that allows me to navigate the complexities of life with greater ease. The walk and vulnerability

Embarking on an 8-hour walk was not about the physical journey for me; it was a profound exploration of my own emotions, a trek into the depths of my soul. As I traversed the miles, the spectrum of feelings that unfolded was both unexpected and cathartic, revealing the vulnerability that lies beneath the surface of our everyday lives.

At the genesis of my walk, I felt an inexplicable presence – a sense that my fiancé was walking beside me. The memories of our time together, the shared laughter, and the warmth of his companionship enveloped me. It was a bittersweet comfort, a reminder that even in loss, the essence of those we love can linger in the most unexpected moments. 

Soon, my walk was marked by another unexpected companion: laughter. It was the light-hearted chuckle of amusement, as I started to notice the same old thoughts in my head. Crazy and whimsical ideas danced in my mind, and instead of dismissing them, I embraced the absurdity of it all. It was a liberating experience, allowing myself to laugh at the chaos within, acknowledging that sometimes, the best way to navigate through the complexities of life is with a sense of humor. I was happy to be noticing them and simply allowing them to pass.

As the journey continued, the laughter gave way to tears.  I allowed them to flow freely as I confronted the tragedies life had thrown my way. The pain of losing my fiancé, the weight of grief, and the unspoken ache that lingered in the recesses of my heart all surged to the forefront. Each step became a cathartic release, a silent acknowledgment of the wounds and how much they had healed through my journey to the Ironman World Championships. And how far they still had to go. The path beneath my feet mirrored the emotional terrain I navigated within myself.

Time really flew by out there. At the six hour mark, I knew I was not done so, I refilled my water bottle and started out on another loop. I don’t remember much of this final loop. I was so deep in though, in a very deep meditative state. I was about releasing and moving forward. Allowing the past to be and creating a new future. 

With that last loop,  the mental and emotional fatigue settled in, casting a shadow over the initial exuberance of the journey. The weight of introspection, the emotional rollercoaster, and the sheer duration of the walk began to take its toll. My steps became heavier, and the path, once inviting, now seemed long.

Eight hours and 25 miles later, a deep sense of knowing settled within me – it was time to stop walking. The journey had served its purpose, leading me through laughter, tears, memories, and reflections. Acknowledging this moment of closure was both humbling and liberating. I had ventured into the recesses of my soul, confronted my vulnerabilities, and emerged on the other side with a newfound understanding of myself and my next step forward

After the exhilaration and intensity of competing in the Ironman World Championship, I found myself standing at a crossroads, unsure of what lay ahead. The grueling training, the determination and perseverance needed to get to the finish line, and the support of friends and family had all led to a profound sense of accomplishment. Yet, deep inside, I yearned for something more, a way to connect with my inner self and map out the path for my future. This is why I made the decision to embark on a silent walk for several hours straight, seeking solace and a reconnection with my higher self.

But as the excitement faded, a lingering question remained: “What’s next?”

I decided to embark on a silent walk with an initial goal of at least 6 hours as a way to pause, reflect, and connect with my inner self. This deliberate choice to remain silent was about eliminating external noise to allow my thoughts and feelings to rise to the surface. No phone, no headphones, no noise.

The silence of my journey allowed me to peel away the layers of distraction that often clouded my inner voice. It became an opportunity to get reacquainted with my higher self, that part of me that often knows what’s best, but can be drowned out by the noise of daily life.

I also recognized the importance of giving back to the community that had supported me along the way, by mentoring and inspiring others to embark on their own journeys.

A Life Changing Walk

After completing the Ironman World Championship, I was in desperate need of a mental reset and a chance to reconnect with myself. It had been a grueling journey to the championship, filled with endless hours of training and relentless determination. Now, I yearned for a moment of peace to clear my mind and move forward with a sense of inner balance.

So, on a serene Monday morning, I decided to simply embark on a walk. It was an intentional choice, a personal pilgrimage to restore my sense of peace and rekindle my connection with myself.

I grabbed a water and put my phone on airplane mode. No headphones, no distractions, just me and my thoughts. My initial goal was to walk for at least 6 hours and then reevaluate if more time was needed. 

As I set off on my journey, I was filled with a unique mix of emotions. The transition from a grueling competition to a solitary walk allowed me to shed the intensity of the race and embrace a calmer, more reflective state of mind. The sensation of being disconnected from the  world was strangely liberating. For the next several hours, I was free to just be. 

After the first few minutes, I no longer cared about my phone. I had the opportunity to tune into the world within me. The warmth of the sun on my face, the waves crashing, and the melodious birds became more vivid. It was truly a return to the present moment. 

With each step, my thoughts would jump and change. I contemplated my journey to the Ironman World Championship, my sacrifices, the mental struggle of working, and training, and moving, and the lessons learned. The absence of digital distractions allowed me to delve into my inner world, reflect on my achievements, and ponder my future. 

As the hours passed, I found myself engaged in deep self-reflection, seeking to understand my motivations, my purpose, and my aspirations beyond the world of competitive sports. The walk provided the space I needed to clear my mind, evaluate my priorities, and chart a course for my future.

Time really flew by out there. I was so engaged with the moment. It was very interesting to watch the day as it flowed from morning to afternoon and evening. The different sounds and movements, and people were not something I had honestly given a lot of thought to before. 

As I approached the 6 hour mark, I felt I was not quite done yet. So, I continued on my way. After 8 hours and 25 miles walked, I felt complete. I felt renewed, healed, and with a new purpose and direction for my life. 

As the sun dipped below the horizon, It was time to rejoin the world. I gazed at the stars above, pondering the vastness of the universe and contemplating my own place within it. It was a serene and meditative moment, a stark contrast to the adrenaline-fueled intensity of Ironman training. 

 I had reconnected with myself and gained the clarity I had sought. The inner peace and renewed perspective I had achieved during this journey were invaluable.

This journey had rekindled the connection between my inner world and the outer one, marking the beginning of a new chapter in my life beyond the Ironman World Championship. It was a pivotal step in my ongoing quest for balance and self-discovery.

I will delve deeper into the realizations and thoughts I had while out there in the next few weeks. Also, I will talk about what it was like to do something as simple and profound as simply walking.

The Ironman triathlon, with its grueling challenges of swimming, cycling, and running, is not only a physical test but also a mental battle. While training for this ultimate endurance event, I’ve faced exhaustion, self-doubt, and pushing my limits to the brink. And then my housing situation unexpectedly becomes a challenge, the mental fortitude required to persevere is put to an even more significant test. In this blog post, we will explore the mental toll of Ironman training and how it can be further compounded by the difficulties of finding housing in Kona, the iconic host of the World Championship.

The Housing Challenge in Kona

The harsh reality of living in Kona and preparing for this event. The finding of suitable housing is definitely a daunting task. Kona is a small town on the Big Island of Hawaii, and its limited housing options are extremely over priced. I did not know my housing was even in jeopardy until the 1st of the month. This adds an extreme level of stress to not only training, but working, and taking my daughter off to college.

The Ironman World Championship draws thousands of participants and spectators from around the globe. As a result, the demand for accommodation in Kona during the race week far exceeds the town’s limited supply. Athletes may find themselves in direct competition with each other for available housing, which adds stress to an already intense period of preparation.

  1. Soaring Rental Prices

With the surge in demand, rental prices in Kona skyrocket during the Ironman week. Athletes and their families are often left grappling with exorbitant costs, stretching their budgets to secure a place to stay. Financial concerns, on top of the already challenging training regime, can be mentally draining.

The Mental Struggle Amidst Housing Woes

The combination of mentally taxing Ironman training and the housing challenges in Kona has created the perfect storm. Mental fatigue from training, coupled with the stress of finding a place to live, have had a profound effect on my overall well-being.

The mental toll of housing difficulties is spilling over into not only my training, but my recovery. I’m tired all the time from lack of sleep. I am not focusing well on my intervals.

I am still meditating. I know I would be much worse off without my practice. I practice gratitude in the morning and a mindfulness practice in the evening. Im not denying the thoughts I feel are negative. Im simply recognizing and releasing. Seemingly recognizing and releasing the same thoughts over and over again. Each time I get closer. Im working on self care.
